My talk is about digital transformation. Digital transformation is a word that means many different things to many different people. At first glance it appears to be just a move from the analog to the digital world. But it is much more than that. It is an integral part of human evolution. A species has never been able to predict how it evolved. We could never predict our move from stone and sticks to microchips. Evolution only makes sense looking backwards. Therefore, as we step into the next big stage of human evolution, let us see what is potentially in store for us and how we can influence our evolution.

Neural networks are one of the most dominant forms of AI algorithms being used today. They seem to be the right solution to a myriad of problems and are often considered to provide objective answers to a variety of complex questions, but why? A neural network can be tuned to cope with a wide range of situations, which is great, but is it always correct to do so? We will present a range of manipulations to a predefined neural network to show their effects on the results it can produce. Examples are the use of different training sets and variations in configuration, but also changing the neural network during runs, which could affect it in certain and uncertain ways. We will explain why this is not necessarily a fault of the network or even a bad thing in general, but that it does require some careful thinking when working with neural networks. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, but how about the opposite? All over the world, people working on neural networks are taking different approaches but are expecting the same results. Is that not insanity?

The Java language and versioning has taken a new path. Every 6 months a new version is released, bringing new features and improvements to the language and the JVM. You might discuss that these changes started with the release of Java 8 in March 2014. After three years of Java 7 it brought a whole new (functional) paradigm to the Java programming language and marked grand point in the history of the Java language.
Since Java 8 is almost at the end of its lifecycle, and will be replaced by Java 11 as a Long Term Supported version, now is the time to learn which new and important features it brought us.

In this workshop we will go into the functional paradigm of Java 8, handle Lambdas, Optionals, the Streaming API and the major rehaul of the date-time API. So that’s what we’re gonna do in this session: building a blockchain from scratch, using plain old java and a little Spring Boot, and getting it working in 40 minutes!
