SoundCloud Seeking SRE
Speaker Session
About the talk
Ever since Google spilled the beans and published “Site Reliability
Engineering: How Google Runs Production Systems” (O’Reilly 2016, also available for free online), anybody can get their feet wet applying SRE principles. SoundCloud joined the game much earlier. Starting in 2012, we have gone through a number of iterations implementing our own way of SRE. Blindly copying what other organizations are doing will almost certainly fail, in particular if those organizations operate at a very different scale and with a very different culture. However, if taken the right way, the lessons that can be learned from Google’s SRE book are surprisingly applicable to mid-size modern internet enterprises. I would like to share the tales from our five-year mission to site reliability, including the role that our fairly radical DevOps approach played along the way.

A New Dawn of the Human Experience: Artificial Sentience and Fabricated Empathy in Cognitive Computing
Speaker Session
About the talk
Exploring how, through the anthropomorphism of machines, we’re creating fabricated empathy that will change the human experience, how we’re asking machines to make ethical decisions they’re grossly unprepared to do, and why AI won’t create an apocalypse of robots who take over the world. Maybe.
Until recently embedded systems development was a slow, messy and painful process. In the last few years though, it’s started to evolve. New hardware, platforms & tooling are emerging at accelerating speed, to form a whole new ecosystem, and launch an explosion of creative innovation in IoT.
In this talk we’ll explore what makes this possible, discuss where it might go next, and learn exactly how you can join in this explosive growth for yourself.

ETHICAL DESIGN AND ITS IMPACT ON UX
Speaker Session
About the talk
Getting sites really fast requires more than tools and techniques, but a complete rethink of how we approach building for the web. When we built our new product, we started out with some strong considerations and opinions to build a better product for our users. We opted for an approach of no-tracking, limited use of third parties as well as dependencies and aimed for the best performance we can achieve. This led to a fast and solid experience that not only benefits our users, but also greatly benefits ourselves. This talk is a guide and advice on what has worked well and hopefully most of all, an inspiration for how we can build for a better web.

The process of datafication - What we have learnt from implementing a real-time and analytics data infrastructure based on Kafka and Hadoop
Speaker Session
About the talk
Kambi is a world-leading supplier of sportsbook services, however, AI and automation has beenchanging the way we engineer and build our systems and services. A key enabler in this process is to make data available at the right time, in an machine readable format for any part of our system to consume and act upon. For companies with a history of more than ten years, this can be a challenging task. Often parts of the system are still in the famous monolith, running on legacy frameworks and application servers, while other parts may be built on micro service-like principles with point-to-point integrations. All of this together with newly developed applications that need to cater for future data needs. In this talk, Viktor will share learnings from Kambi’s journey to transform our technology into modern, data-driven systems that can make available valuable data in a timely manner for anyone to consume and act upon.

We are bringing Internet closer to people, reverting Internet centralization with focus on convenience, security, and performance.
Why do we love the cloud, and what we need to love our Internal IT again?
Speaker Session
About the talk
Cloud computing is awesome! It speeds up deployment and frees us from having and maintaining physical servers. But there are problems: it is not cheap, privacy is questionable, reliability is hard to control, and performance is… complex. In the end of the day it is all about convenience: we love the cloud because it gives us click-and-use (but first give me that credit card number) to all sort of resources that we desperately need for our professional and personal life. But what went wrong with having our own servers? Why do we avoid having our servers so much? And what we need to feel comfortable to having them again? IWe is an open source solution, which mean you can use it for free, that enables you to consume your Internal IT as a very convenient cloud. It has solid technical features and an interesting business model that allows you to create your own cloud provider that you can use for your own and to rent your resources.

About the talk
The speed of light is rather slow when it comes to real time computing, a driverless car couldn’t rely on the cloud to make it’s decisions, nor would you want to depend on the cloud for your smart tv’s, controlling drones, or any of the many smart devices that are becoming such a part of our every day life. A generation or two ago we saw what happened when everything got a power cord and electronics took over what was previously manual labor — Now everything gets a chip. In this session we’ll look at what that means, what tools are available, and how you can use Edge computing and IoT as solutions for your products.

Machine Learning in AML, Fraud, & Chargeback Prediction
Speaker Session
About the talk
Machine learning and data science have recently exploded in popularity in the tech industry. The abundance of data in growing companies, maturity of the tools and frameworks, as well as the rise of the data science profession have propelled machine learning as an effective solution to particular production problems. In my 3+ years at TransferWise, I’ve witnessed the entire financial crime prevention front transition from SQL queries to sophisticated machine learning systems. In this session I walk through our journey of machine learning to its place in three critical areas of financial crime prevention: Fraud, Chargebacks, and Anti-Money Laundering. First we describe the business need, how supervised and unsupervised machine learning is applicable and aids each of these three areas and more effective than existing solutions. Second we describe how we built up these systems, which frameworks, tools, and libraries we used, the challenges and regrets, and how Ops, Product, and Data Scientists work effectively together. Finally we explore the technical challenges of building and maintaining data pipelines in an ever growing distributed system with added challenge of working with sensitive data. Following the session, you should walk away with an understanding of how to approach building machine learning solutions in financial crime prevention.

About the talk
Building a system composed of microservices requires a way of managing the complexity. Managing a reliable and scalable cluster of nodes with high service density requires orchestrating. Service Fabric is one of these orchestrators running on both Linux and Windows and has a build-in application model for both Java and .Net which takes care of service discovery, upgrade, monitoring and partitioning.
Service Fabric is a tremendous platform and runs most of Microsoft Azure services, but as any great platform, patterns and best practices help you get a head start and avoid common pitfalls.
This session will discuss the pitfalls and patterns in order to quickly reap the benefits of utilizing the capabilities of Service Fabric gathered during the last couple of years working with Service Fabric with multiple clients.

Provisioning services through the Kubernetes Service Catalog and the Open Service Broker API
Speaker Session
About the talk
Kubernetes has made deploying our applications much easier, but deploying databases, caches, messaging systems, and other backend services still requires you to deal with the intricacies of each individual service. You still need to refer to the documentation of a service to learn how to configure and deploy it properly. Because of this, developers usually aren’t allowed to provision services themselves, but must instead ask the ops team to do it for them. This sometimes takes days, blocking the developers in the meantime.
Luckily, the Kubernetes Service Catalog, a new project currently part of the Kubernetes incubator group of projects, aims to solve these problems by allowing developers to self-provision any service in a standardized way – without having to dive into the specifics of each service.
In this talk, we’ll explain what the Kubernetes Service Catalog is and how it interacts with external service brokers through the Open Service Broker API. We’ll also see how you can implement your own broker to make your own services easily provisionable in any Kubernetes cluster.

Majestic Modular Monoliths
Speaker Session
About the talk
Microservices are everywhere. Everyone seems to be either going into that direction or is talking about doing so. But are they really the best choice for you?
Developers! Architects! Buckle up as we’re going to cut through the hype. Instead of going all-in on microservices or all-in on big ball of mud, we’ll introduce a third choice: the Majestic Modular Monolith! We’ll look at what it brings to the table, when it may be a good fit and how it compares to the other two approaches in terms of code organization, productivity, scalability and much more. We’ll look at how this can be designed and implemented in practice. Get ready. We won’t shy away from the hard questions.

Testing Java Microservices with Consumer-driven Contracts
Speaker Session
About the talk
Testing microservices is challenging. This is because, despite their independence, they are often still coupled via API calls or message passing. It’s this coupling that can lead to issues such as:
– Too much reliance on slow and brittle end-to-end testing
– False positives generated by inaccurate stubs
– No idea whether changing an API endpoint will break anything
– Difficult to reason about microservice dependencies
This talk will introduce the consumer-driven contract testing technique, a TDD at the API level approach for microservices. It aims to resolve all of these issues and more, leading to truly independently testable and releasable services.

Rich hypermedia web services with Spring HATEOAS and the Affordances API
Speaker Session
About the talk
HATEOAS has long been a prerequisite of REST that hasn’t shown its benefits clearly and understandably, so most developers avoided implementing it. The problem is, we haven’t seen an interesting practical implementation, until now! After spending the last two years in development, the Spring HATEOAS team has released a build of the Affordances API. The API implements resources with actions and shows how HATEOAS can truly decouple evolving web services from the frontend. Join me to explore this exciting new API and see for yourself that HATEOAS isn’t just a REST purists buzzword

What Java developers need to know about Kubernetes
Speaker Session
About the talk
A big change is happening in software development. Docker is transforming the way we build application while Kubernetes has grown into a full-featured microservice platform. Java-based applications always had their own packaging format (jars, wars, ears) and runtimes in the form of applications servers of different sophistication. What can the world of containers offer for developing and running Java applications? Beyond the fact that containers can support a polyglot environment, container orchestrators present a novel solution to getting your code running on the right servers with the right configuration. In this talk I will show how all of this affects the development process and architecture of Java applications.

Immutable Collections in Java 9 – do we need them?
Speaker Session
About the talk
With the release of Java 9, we got an opportunity to elegantly create an immutable collection by using nice factory methods. But, what benefits do we get as developers with immutable collection instead of getting an exception when we try to change the content of the collection? Besides this, the microbenchmarking features introduced in Java 9 will be also presented to compare the performance differences between mutable and immutable collections.

Break Things to Fix Things: Testing more than what “should” work
Speaker Session
About the talk
Have you ever been so excited about building something to only find out much later it’s not working as expected? Well, after building your exciting new thing did you try to break it, use it in an unexpected way? ensure beyond a doubt that your application is safeguarded against all possible unintended functionalities?
In an ideal world users would use applications we build in specific predefined ways allowing us to build for the happiest of happy path scenarios. Though in reality, that doesn’t always happen. This talk will dive deep into how testing your application in unexpected ways at different points of the development process can allow you to discover bugs and hidden vulnerabilities and will conclude with a live demo inviting members from the audience to try and test some applications in the wild. It will be exciting, it will be daring, and most importantly it will highlight the true joys of quality engineering.

Video analysis beyond deep learning
Speaker Session
About the talk
Although deep learning methods have become widely available in the recent years, there are many problems that can not be solved directly with off-the-shelf solutions. In this talk, I will discuss how state-of-the-art deep learning methods designed for standard tasks (e.g. object recognition in images) can be integrated in custom software products designed for various specific tasks (e.g. abnormal event detection in video). I will provide examples of integrating deep learning technology in two distinct systems for video surveillance, which we developed at SecurifAI. The goal of the talk is to raise the awareness around the necessity of building around the available deep learning technology in order to differentiate your product. The talk will include some technical details from the area of AI, although it will be addressed to a more general audience

The new horizon to a mobile application backend: A serverless story
Speaker Session
About the talk
It is a time of ado nowadays in the development of backend architectures. We have been offered in a relatively short time the possibilities of choosing from IaaS to beyond. But what is the optimal choice when we want to create an adaptive-to-change architecture that serves a mobile application? Does serverless fit well here? And what do we have to take into consideration when developing our design to the cloud? Let’s try to answer these questions and more others together by getting our hands dirty in the code and discovering BaaS and FaaS in an disruptive talk.

Microservices & Frontends – everyone should have a BFF!
Speaker Session
About the talk
Users expect our applications to be fast. Having a fast backend is great but when you use microservice, you quickly end up having to make a number of calls to populate your frontend, which costs time and roundtrips. In this session, we will take machine learning and hidden markov models for a spin in order to predict what the frontend needs from our backend. That way, our backend becomes a BFF (Backend for Frontend) and improves the perceived performance and, thus, our user’s happiness.

AI-enhanced UI/UX
Speaker Session
About the talk
If we agree that building for the user is our main goal as developers, I think we can also acknowledge that this is a process that requires multiple iterations — a process that developers seldom navigate by looking at the data.
Usually, there’s somebody else, be it a product owner, marketing or salesperson, analyzing it and feeding developers a feature list needed for the next product release. There lies the gap between developers and users which leads to lots of guess-work.
So, the product development feedback loop is broken.
How can we remedy this and how can we accelerate this process? What if product micro-metrics could be directly integrated into the user-facing product components? And what if we could build these components to automatically adapt to users’ behaviors based on micro-metrics and provide a personalized user experience?
Today through use of machine learning it is possible to optimize user interactions by measuring product micro-metrics and automatically adapting user-facing components to provide a personalized user experience.

About the talk
Entering the blockchain and crypto space has been life changing. As most people do when discovering blockchain, I soon became obsessed with Bitcoin and Ethereum. I was and still am a descentralisation fan girl that can’t stop gushing about how cool and revolutionary blockchain is.
It’s pretty strightforward and easy to grasp: blockchain is a descentralized, open, transparent, secured and encrypted network, allowing for permissionless and trustless exchange of value.
But the implications and applications of this technology are a game changer!
